Gallicantu (Latin: The Roosters Crow)

back to contents

Catholic Church dedicated to St. Peter, where he denied Jesus 3 times.

Mathew 26: 31 Then Jesus said to them: All you shall be scandalized in me this night. For it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be dispersed. 32 But after I shall be risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. 33 And Peter answering, said to him: Although all shall be scandalized in thee, I will never be scandalized. 34 Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, that in this night before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. 35 Peter saith to him: Yea, though I should die with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner said all the disciples.

Non Novi Illum.

Mathew 26: 69 But Peter sat without in the court: and there came to him a servant maid, saying: Thou also wast with Jesus the Galilean. 70 But he denied before them all, saying: I know not what thou sayest. 71 And as he went out of the gate, another maid saw him, and she saith to them that were there: This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth. 72 And again he denied with an oath, I know not the man. 73 And after a little while they came that stood by, and said to Peter: Surely thou also art one of them; for even thy speech doth discover thee. 74 Then he began to curse and to swear that he knew not the man. And immediately the cock crew. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus which he had said: Before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. And going forth, he wept bitterly.

Adjacent dungeon thought to be where the Lord was chained overnight as depicted in Gibson's movie. The human shadow with outstreched hands is though to be a miracle image of the Lord chained.

Psalm 87(88): 2 O Lord, the God of my salvation: I have cried in the day, and in the night before thee. 3 Let my prayer come in before thee: incline thy ear to my petition. 4 For my soul is filled with evils: and my life hath drawn nigh to hell. 5 I am counted among them that go down to the pit: I am become as a man without help, 6 Free among the dead. Like the slain sleeping in the sepulchres, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cast off from thy hand. 7 They have laid me in the lower pit: in the dark places, and in the shadow of death. 8 Thy wrath is strong over me: and all thy waves thou hast brought in upon me. 9 Thou hast put away my acquaintance far from me: they have set me an abomination to themselves. I was delivered up, and came not forth: 10 My eyes languished through poverty. All the day I cried to thee, O Lord: I stretched out my hands to thee. 11 Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? or shall physicians raise to life, and give praise to thee? 12 Shall any one in the sepulchre declare thy mercy: and thy truth in destruction? 13 Shall thy wonders be known in the dark; and thy justice in the land of forgetfulness? 14 But I, O Lord, have cried to thee: and in the morning my prayer shall prevent thee. 15 Lord, why castest thou off my prayer: why turnest thou away thy face from me? 16 I am poor, and in labours from my youth: and being exalted have been humbled and troubled. 17 Thy wrath hath come upon me: and thy terrors have troubled me. 18 They have come round about me like water all the day: they have compassed me about together. 19 Friend and neighbour thou hast put far from me: and my acquaintance, because of misery.

In the same dungeon is a shadow thought to be a miracle image of Jesus' mother watching over him.
