The Upper Room: Four Events

back to contents

There were four institutions established by Jesus in the the upper room.

THE INSTITUTION OF THE EUCHRIST. Mathew 26: 26 And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke: and gave to his disciples, and said: Take ye, and eat. This is my body .27 And taking the chalice, he gave thanks, and gave to them, saying: Drink ye all of this .28 For this is my blood of the new testament , which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins. 29 And I say to you, I will not drink from henceforth of this fruit of the vine , until that day when I shall drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father. 30 And a hymn being said, they went out unto mount Olivet.

CONFESSION. John 20: 19 Now when it was late that same day, the first of the week, and the doors were shut , where the disciples were gathered together, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them: Peace be to you. 20 And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord. 21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you. 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. 23 Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.

THE PRIESTHOOD. Mathew 28: 16 And the eleven disciples went into Galilee, unto the mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17 And seeing them they adored: but some doubted. 18 And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. 19 Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.

THE CHURCH. Acts 1: 13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James of Alpheus, and Simon Zelotes, and Jude the brother of James. 14 All these were persevering with one mind in prayer with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. ...Acts 2: 1And when the days of the Pentecost were accomplished, they were all together in one place: 2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: 4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak.
